KeNRA members have been for many years working on this thematic area not as water for drinking but as a resource which influence their movement and living patterns. Through their day-to- day activities which is directly affected by water in the area through fishing, irrigation among other and other uses, member organisations such as Endrois Welfare Council, Homa Hills, Kwale County Natural Resources Network have worked tirelessly to ensure right laws and policies are developed since they affect their day to day lives and thisisdone through coordination by KeNRA secretariat.
In the recent enacted Water Act 2016 which its main purpose is to align the water sector with the Constitution’s primary objective of devolution. The act recognizes that water related functions are a shared responsibility between the national government and the county government. It also gives priority to use of abstracted water for domestic purposes over irrigation and other uses.
Other key provisions in the Constitution that touch upon water include: affirmative action programs to ensure water for marginalized groups; the responsibility of the national government for management of the use of international waters and water resources and definition of national versus county public works.
KeNRA members working under this thematic areas contributed immensely in the development of this Bill and lobbying to been acted into Act among other laws governing the resource.
